At Hæhre Entreprenør AS, ecological restoration is integrated into ongoing infrastructure projects, where environmental objectives are balanced with safety requirements, technical standards, and construction schedules.
As part of TEAM#UP, we have developed an ArcGIS StoryMap based on the E10 Hålogalandsvegen project in Northern Norway. The StoryMap presents how ecological considerations are embedded into planning, construction, and environmental follow-up in a complex infrastructure context.

The E10 StoryMap is currently available in Norwegian, with an English version in preparation.
The E10 project, delivered in collaboration with Statens vegvesen (Norwegian Public Roads Administration) as client and Skanska as main contractor, involves construction through highly sensitive terrain, including rivers, wetlands, and ecologically vulnerable areas.
In this context, environmental work is guided by the mitigation hierarchy: prioritising avoidance of impacts, and where this is not possible, applying restoration measures to reduce and repair ecological disturbance during and after construction.
Rather than describing the project in abstract terms, the StoryMap provides concrete examples from site practice, including how early design decisions were adjusted to reduce impacts on river systems and how ecological considerations influenced technical solutions during the design phase.
It also illustrates how restoration measures are adapted during construction. Working in natural systems involves uncertainty, and planned solutions often require adjustment in response to site conditions. This makes close collaboration between engineers, construction teams, and ecological experts essential.
A key element of the project is Hæhre’s structured approach to environmental follow-up during construction, including the “Green Course” (Grønt kurs) model. Developed in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), this approach integrates ecological expertise into practical construction processes, training, and on-site environmental decision-making.
NINA has also developed a dedicated StoryMap presenting the Green Course concept in more detail: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/d06d643cd8e642b79c599fb0e26f2813
A separate StoryMap is currently under development to present restoration experiences from Arctic environments on Svalbard. Stay posted to explore more as it becomes available!
